Albania, a country in the Balkans region of southeastern Europe, has at times throughout its history found itself in an isolated position internationally. Its unique position is often illustrated by its language, Albanian, which is one of the only European languages not related to any of the other major continental linguistic branches. However, after the fall of communism in 1990, the principal goal of the succeeding governments has been the integration of the country into the wider international community. There has been much progress towards that end, and today, Albania is one of the most well-connected countries in the world, with 40 embassies around the world. Albania became a full member of NATO in 2009, and became an official candidate for joining the European Union in June of 2014.
But in this country of 2.9 million residents, where some 70% of the land is mountainous and 25% is arable, agriculture still plays an important role, with major products including tobacco, figs, olives, meat, and dairy products. During the communist years, Albania was completely self-sustained, growing everything it needed within its borders, and this spirit of self-sustenance continues to this day. One area in which Albania is looking within for what it needs is in the area of creativity, especially in advertising, internet marketing, and video production, and the company most associated with Albanian creative ingenuity is Pika Production, from Tirana.
Tirana, Albania’s capital and largest city, is also the cultural center and economic engine of the country. The municipality is home to over 800,000 people, and many of the most important cultural and educational institutions of the country, including the University of Tirana, the Polytechnic University of Tirana, the monumental Palace of Culture, and many others. It’s no wonder, then, that many of the creatives and artistic technicians in the country are based in the city, where many of the country’s major publications, television stations, and museums are based. © 2016 Raul M. / J.
