Avasta Resort & Spa in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka has been selected to receive the BID Quality Crown Award for 2015. The BID committee chose them because of their commitment to quality and because of their attention to customer service and good corporate citizenship.

The Cradle of Sri Lankan Buddhism

Anuradhapura, the capital of Sri Lanka until the tenth century and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, presents many wonderful experiences for the visitor. Buildings dating to before the time of Christ still stand, it is home to the oldest Buddhist monastery in the country, and a national park where you can take safaris is less than an hour away.

The town was made into the capital around 380 B.C. It immediately received a radical facelift in accordance with its new importance, and was supplied with an extensive water supply system, hotels, hospitals, and even neighborhoods set aside for “huntsmen, for scavengers and for heretics as well as for foreigners.” A century and a half later the king converted to Buddhism and built a monastery and park called Mahamegha Gardens. After centuries of prosperity and commercial importance, the city was eventually abandoned in the tenth century as wars on the island made it desirable to find a more protected location.

One of the most striking buildings from the early period of Anuradhapura is the Maha Stupa. The building is a round structure 370 feet in circumference and 180 feet tall and was intended to resemble a bubble of water. A fifth century Chinese Buddhist monk wrote that more than 3000 monks lived there. It fell into ruins in modern times, but in the late 19th century the building was restored so that tourists today can enjoy its ancient glory.

Another fascinating relic from the past is a 2,250 year old ficus tree planted from a cutting that, according to legend, was taken from the tree under which the Buddha received enlightenment. It is the oldest tree in the world that can be authenticated historically, as it has been continuously guarded by monks in all of that time. The ancient Buddhist monuments of Anuradhapura are clustered around this tree called Sri Maha Bodhi. It is guarded by a 2 metre tall statue of the Buddha carved during the 4th century, one of four originals placed around the Sri Maha Bodhi and facing the cardinal directions.

Along with the Kuttam Pokuna Twin Ponds, the Mirisawetiya Dagoba, the Isurumuniya Temple, numerous statues and other works of art, every site in the ancient city of Anuradhapura has a story behind it. These treasures were hidden by the dense jungle for nearly 1,000 years, until they were uncovered in modern times, and provide a rich and unique experience unfound anywhere else in the world. Off site, the city has established museums where other ancient relics can be enjoyed.
