Togo, a thin slice of a country—just 30 miles across—wedged between Ghana and Benin on West Africa’s Atlantic coast, is known for its elaborate traditional earthen huts called “tatas,” its beautiful tropical beaches, and its large agricultural sector, which produces coffee, cocoa beans, and peanuts that are exported around the world. But with a population of approximately 7.5 million, and an increasingly diversified economy, Togo has been singled out as a high-potential center of growth and development in the region, attracting ever increasing amounts of foreign investment and cooperation in recent years.
One place where these changes can most certainly be felt is Lomé, Togo’s largest city, capital, and center of commerce, trade, and industry. Here, the creation of new skyscrapers, hotels, and infrastructural improvements are all contributing to a feeling of optimism in the streets, and tangible changes around the city. For one, its port is being developed into a modern harbor with the help of significant overseas investment, which should help to increase the significance of its already substantial import and distribution industry. The city has also been home to a free trade zone since 1968, which is now home to over 60 companies from around the world that employ over 12,000 people in Lomé. Its burgeoning tourism sector, buoyed by its trademark beaches and cultural attractions such as its vibrant marketplace, the Grand Marché, also is an encouraging sign for the city’s future.
As the economic realities in the country change, larger, more complex businesses and organizations will be forming and entering Togo, resulting in an increased interaction between private entities and the government of the Togolese Republic. The leading law firm working in this space in Togo is Aquereburu & Partners, based in the capital, Lomé. This multidisciplinary law firm has intense expertise in many of the areas of interest to businesses both big and small, including tax law, environmental law, and business laws, such as those dealing with trade, private enterprises, and finance, among others. The firm has grown throughout the years with a dedication to Quality and Excellence in all areas of operations, and through the relentless pursuit of continuous improvement. © 2016 Jave Z. / David V.
